What is the abortion pill and how does it work?

The abortion pill, also referred to as a medical abortion, is a chemical form of abortion that utilizes two medications to end an unwanted pregnancy. The first pill, called Mifepristone, stops the production of the hormone progesterone, which is used to support the pregnancy. Without progesterone, the pregnancy will end. The second pill, Misoprostol, is administered 24-48 hours later and causes contractions to expel the pregnancy from the uterus.

When can I take the pill?

According to the FDA, patients should only undergo a chemical abortion within the first 10 weeks of pregnancy. Taking the abortion pill too late in pregnancy may lead to an incomplete abortion and retained fetal tissue. This can lead to infections and sepsis.

To find out if you are eligible for the abortion pill, you’ll need an ultrasound scan. This will determine the gestational age of your pregnancy and identify any additional health concerns that may lead to complications. Schedule your free ultrasound at Soundview Pregnancy Services today!

What are the side effects of the pill?

The abortion pill will be accompanied by cramping and bleeding as the pregnancy is passed. Additionally, most women experience side effects such as nausea, fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, and exhaustion.  The medication is also associated with various long-term health risks, such as hemorrhaging, infection, and sepsis.
