Adoption can seem intimidating because many people have never experienced anything related to the adoption process. However, adoption can be a chance to create something beautiful out of what seems like a crisis now. At Soundview, we are here to demystify the adoption process so you can determine if it is the right choice for you.

No matter what type of adoption you choose, you are in control.

The choice is yours. It’s up to you the amount of contact you will have with your child. You choose the parents you want to adopt your child. You can name your child. You have control over the details of the process and what your adoption plan will look like. You are free to change your mind.

Below are some examples of adoption situations:

Open Adoption

Open adoption allows contact with the child and the adoptive family. Depending on your agreement, this may include regular visitation, phone calls, photos, or life updates about the child. This can be a great option for individuals who would like to still be involved in the child’s life.

Closed Adoption

Closed adoption can be an option for those who feel as if no contact would help them move on from this point in their lives. This arrangement does not allow for any contact between you and the adoptive family. Your name and contact information will not be available to them.

Semi-Open Adoption

You can tailor your adoption plan to meet your needs and wants for your child. Depending on what you are looking for, you are able to address your concerns and desires with the adoptive family you choose to work out an agreement that both parties are happy with.

Safe Haven

This may seem like an odd option, but for some women, their pregnancy has occurred in very severe circumstances. Some women may need to hide their pregnancy for their own safety or out of fear. For the woman who is in this rare but serious situation of giving birth with no plans for the baby’s care, Safe Haven laws were created.

Safe Haven law says that a baby can be abandoned at a safe location where a responsible adult is present and there is no legal repercussion for the parent. That means if you leave your baby somewhere safe where a responsible adult can care for the baby, you won’t get in trouble. No questions asked. Some examples of safe locations are hospitals, fire stations, or police departments.
