5 Ways to Increase Your Body Literacy

Written by Erin Drinkwater, LCSW-R

First things first, what is Body Literacy and why is it important?  This term refers to the ability to observe, learn about and understand one’s own body, including its signals, rhythms and functions, to promote health and well-being.  Simply put, fully understanding your body enables you to make responsible and healthy choices that will make you feel better—body, mind and spirit.  Below are just a few action steps that you can take:

  1. Increase your self-awareness by reflecting upon your feelings and their triggers—regularly asking yourself the question, “What am I feeling and why am I feeling it?”  Journaling is a useful means of recognizing patterns.
  2. Understand your body’s signals through mindfulness and breath work.  Sit quietly while breathing slowly and deeply, noting sensations felt in each part of your body from the top of your head to the bottoms of your feet.
  3. Track your menstrual cycles, nutrition, movement and sleep.  There are MANY apps and wearable devices available to get you started!  Just keep in mind that these tools are not a replacement for care provided by licensed medical professionals.  Tracking will help you recognize the ways in which your physical, mental and emotional health are interconnected.
  4. Educate yourself—learning basic anatomy and physiology will empower you to address ailments/discomfort quickly and allow you to better communicate symptoms and concerns to your healthcare providers.  Sharing data gathered by apps and wearables is also a great way to advocate for yourself when seeking support.
  5. Take control of your sexual health. Sexuality is heavily influenced by the social, cultural and spiritual norms around us. Despite what our culture may promote, thinking critically about your sexuality and choices will help you make healthy decisions that are in alignment with your values. Many people are choosing to delay or forgo sexual activity in order to focus on their overall wellness.  Be aware of the signs/symptoms of early pregnancy and common sexually transmitted infections (STI’s).
