The Importance of Obtaining an Ultrasound in Pregnancy

An ultrasound is a diagnostic medical test that uses soundwaves to create on screen images from inside your body.  An ultrasound during pregnancy is critically important once you have received a positive pregnancy test.  While a urine or blood test can indicate positive HCG, (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) hormone levels of pregnancy, the ultrasound provides a real time view of your pregnancy.

During a scan, the location, viability and fetal age of pregnancy are determined.  If you are considering abortion, parenting or adoption, an ultrasound exam is vital in your decision making process, as these important facts about your pregnancy can affect your health.  An ectopic pregnancy, according to American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, “can be a life-threatening emergency” in which the developing fetus is outside the uterus.  Your sonographer, during ultrasound, will carefully assess for this dangerous condition.  Determining fetal heart activity and fetal gestational age, will also be carefully assessed during your ultrasound appointment.
